Unprecedented Access and Lifelong Learning through MOOCs

I am thrilled to have this opportunity to reflect upon my love of learning, my beliefs about education, and how Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are revolutionizing the way that information is dispersed.

Through MIT's free online courses, the institution is providing unprecedented access to some of the most elite information.  This opportunity is an affirmation of a belief that I've held deeply for as long as I can remember:  Education and access are basic human rights.  Education is imperative.  Access to knowledge is essential.  Skillful application of knowledge needs to be fostered, and creating something, anything new, is a transformation. This knowledge cycle could never even begin without education and access.  That is why I feel so passionately about MOOCs and MIT's involvement in them.

While MOOCs may not be able to take the place of traditional higher learning, I encourage students, self learners, and educators to give open learning a try.  In my article, I offer advice to my students on how to choose a free online course.  I loved recounting my first awareness of MOOCs, which were introduced to me by one of my dear students, Alex.
